Alberta Citizen Science Community of Practice

The field of citizen science is growing in Alberta, with a diversity of organizations and individuals engaging in science and environmental monitoring. Through citizen science, Albertans of all ages have the opportunity to contribute to data and information to understand environmental change, inform decision-making and support environmental stewardship.
The Alberta Citizen Science Community of Practice (CitSci Alberta – COP) is open to all practitioners, researchers, environmental managers, educators, project coordinators, and volunteers who share a passion for citizen science. CitSci Alberta is a space to share ideas, information, and resources to advance design, delivery and evaluation of citizen science in Alberta.

"Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern, set of problems, or a passion about a topic, and who deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis."

– WENGER, MCDERMOTT & SNYDER, 2002

Our Community of Practice invites different levels of participation, from organizing to sharing to listening and learning:

-
Core Group – An Alberta CitSci – COP Steering Committee has been established to take on the planning and coordination of Community of Practice activities and guide the learning agenda. Current membership includes representatives from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Inside Education, Nature Alberta, the Alberta Lake Management Society, the Pigeon Lake Watershed Association, the Battle River Watershed Association and the Miistakis Institute.

-
Active Members – participate in Community of Practice meetings and other activities, just not with the regularity and intensity of the core group.

-
Peripheral Members – may attend Community of Practice meetings and other activities as listeners not active participants.
